Athletes and artists are often separate from each other in a school setting. The athletes are hitting the field or on the court while the more artistic types are on the sidelines playing in the band, singing the national anthem, taking shots for the yearbook or even painting a mural of the school mascot in the gym. Sometimes there is an overlap, but in my high school, at least, there was quite a distinction between the two.
